THE STORY
A long time ago, four artists were born. It was the height of the Reagan era, and science fiction films were predicting an apocalyptic future for America. One such film, Robocop, satirically takes on the specter of cash-strapped American cities that have outsourced essential services to private companies, their local police departments managed by multinational conglomerates.
Today, Blackwater security contractors patrol the streets of New Orleans; city school districts are being turned over to so-called “educational management companies”; while for-profit companies such as Veolia Water compete for control over access to safe drinking water and sewage treatment facilities. Yesterday’s nightmare scenario has become our reality.
A quarter century after the New Right declared war on the public sector, the sudden collapse of the Mayan civilization is being replayed amidst the abandoned ruins of urban Detroit.
Mixing pop art and religious iconography, Rogue Citizen has appropriated the visual language of dystopian sci-fi, wartime propaganda films, and video games in a cybernetic send-up of the American obsession with excess and ultra-violence.
